The new US President Donald Trump is capable of paralysing the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC). About this writes The Guardian.
Sources told the publication that the ICC is preparing to introduce the toughest, draconian measures by the US administration. In addition to travel restrictions on the court’s senior staff, including chief prosecutor Karim Khan, Washington may impose financial restrictions, limiting the ICC’s access to banking and payment systems.
The ICC is also worried that Trump could paralyse the ICC’s work by barring MicroSoft Corporation from providing access to its cloud storage facility, where the ICC stores all documents.
‘We fear that sanctions will be used to shut down, to destroy the court,’ one ICC official summarised.
Trump signed an executive order sanctioning the court’s staff back during his first term as president after the ICC decided to investigate possible crimes by US military personnel. At the time, the president accused the structure of bias and corruption. However, in 2021, the next White House host, Joe Biden, lifted the sanctions and visa restrictions.
