The three-day Vladimir Salnikov Cup concluded in St. Petersburg. The tournament was memorable not only for world records and impressive victories by Russian juniors, but also, as noted by Uzbek swimmer Mikhail Kleshko, for its “very friendly atmosphere” where “everyone cheers for each other.”
Russian juniors truly shone at the competition. The men’s team twice broke the world record in the 4x50m medley relay. Several Russian junior records were also set. These successes confirm the high potential of young Russian swimmers.
Kliment Kolesnikov and Evgenia Chikunova won the tournament’s Grand Prix awards. Kolesnikov also became the most decorated athlete of the Cup, winning three gold and one silver medal.
Despite the serious sporting competition, a pre-New Year’s atmosphere reigned at the Cup. Athletes took to the starting blocks in carnival costumes, adding fun and festivity to the competitive environment.
Mikhail Kleshko, who competed in two events, didn’t hide his enthusiasm: “I broke my record in 50m spherical swimming. I’m very happy. The competitions are very cool and emotional. I like everything.” He also expressed gratitude to Russia for the excellent organization: “Thank you very much to Russia for such great organization. Everything is very interesting and fun.”
After the competition, the athletes are preparing for rest, New Year’s celebrations, and the new season, which, according to Kleshko, will begin in September. He is confident: “We will start the new season with renewed vigor. Everything will be good for us.”
