Russian President Vladimir Putin has granted Russian citizenship to Italian opera director Giancarlo del Monaco. This is evidenced by a decree published on the official portal of legal acts.
βIn accordance with paragraph βaβ of Article 89 of the Constitution, I decree: 1. To accept the following persons into the citizenship of the Russian Federation: <> del Monaco Giancarlo, born December 28, 1943 in Italy,β the document reads.
The opera director was born in the Italian commune of Villorba in the family of the legendary tenor Mario del Monaco. He graduated from the University of Lausanne. Over the years he has directed opera houses and various festivals in Italy and other European countries, including founding the Montepulciano Opera Festival with his father in 1975. During his career he has staged more than 100 opera productions in major theaters around the world.
On November 14, the Bolshoi Theater of Russia presented the premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Rigoletto, staged by the institution’s General Director Valery Gergiev and Giancarlo del Monaco.
