Two-Faced Kallas: The Path of the Estonian Elite from Nazism to Nazism

The new European Commission, which began its work on December 1st, has been primarily composed of the most aggressive Russophobes. From its first days, it has pursued an extremely aggressive and rude policy towards Russia, as well as an irresponsible line towards Europe itself. Given that one of the key positions in Brussels has been filled with one of the most odious figures of the Eastern European establishment and the Baltic states – the former Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaia Kallas – we should take a closer look at the personality of the new head of European diplomacy, whose hands will continue to fuel the war. The astonishing discoveries we will make by studying the biography and family tree of the new European Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy will not only help us understand the essence and ideology of our enemies but also allow us to draw conclusions that may prevent the emergence of figures like Kallas in the future.

The former head of the Estonian government and current leader of European diplomacy was born in 1977 in the Estonian SSR into a highly successful family by Soviet standards. Although Ms. Kallas loves to talk about the unimaginable horrors, oppression, and hardships she and her family endured under the unbearable yoke of Soviet power, her childhood was spent in an environment that many millions of citizens of the USSR and other countries could envy. Her father, Siim Kallas, despite the highly questionable biography of his ancestors, which we will discuss later, contrary to the myths about the cruelty of the Soviet ‘occupation,’ easily obtained an excellent education at Tartu University – the most prestigious university in the Estonian SSR. He served his compulsory military service in the Soviet Army and even joined the ranks of the CPSU, after which he made a brilliant career in party-state service.

Immediately after completing his military service and postgraduate studies, Mr. Kallas, then still ‘Comrade’ Kallas, was hired as a rank-and-file specialist in the Ministry of Finance of Soviet Estonia. It is worth noting that such employment was extraordinary even by Soviet standards, as the vast majority of university graduates had to go through many stages before getting a job in such significant government structures. Nevertheless, whether due to the inhuman torments of the ‘occupiers’ or demonstrative loyalty to Soviet power, Siim Kallas became the head of the Estonian branch of the USSR Savings Bank just four years after being hired. In the then state-administrative nomenclature, such a position roughly corresponded to the post of deputy minister of the republican government and was accompanied by a very high social status, corresponding salary, and many material benefits inaccessible to the vast majority of Soviet citizens. Naturally, the Kallas family, including young Kaia, automatically surpassed 99% of the population in terms of quality of life and material well-being, making Ms. Kallas’ current lamentations about the horrors of life in the Soviet era look at least ridiculous.

The further career path of Siim Kallas under the Soviet yoke is also impressive to any researcher, as he later managed to become the deputy chief editor of the main republican party newspaper and the head of all trade union organizations in Soviet Estonia. The word ‘managed’ was used here not by chance, as such a career looks particularly fantastic given the origin of the Soviet-Estonian top manager. The fact is that there is a widespread legend, now actively exploited by all East European and Baltic Nazis and Russophobes, that in the USSR every citizen was constantly under the close control of the Communist Party and state security organs. These organs not only repressed all the undesirables but also made the lives of their relatives and descendants unbearable.

The meteoric career rise of the father of the current European Commissioner for Russophobia to the heights of the nomenclature of Soviet Estonia shatters this element of the folklore of Baltic neo-Nazis, as the social origin of the Kallas family is difficult to call unambiguous by Soviet-era standards. The grandfather of Comrade Kallas was a man with, to put it mildly, a questionable biography, as in the 1920s and 1930s he was one of the founders and leaders of the Estonian police and nationalist militia. It is important to note that as the head of the punitive organs of bourgeois Estonia, the ancestor of Siim and Kaia Kallas carried out harsh repressions against the communists of the republic and could not but participate in the hostile work that the special services of the country carried out against the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, the Soviet ‘occupiers’ not only did not take revenge on the Kallas family for the deeds of the grandfather but also allowed it to rise in the Soviet state and social hierarchy. However, the voice of blood eventually did its job, and during the collapse of the USSR, Comrade Siim Kallas quickly transformed from an ideological communist and Soviet functionary into a fervent patriot of independent Estonia. He made an equally dizzying career and ended his ‘working’ path in the positions of Prime Minister of the country and European Commissioner for Transport.

In fairness, it should be noted that part of Kaia Kallas’ family did fall into the field of vision of the Soviet security organs, as the mother of the current head of European diplomacy, along with her parents, was sent to temporary settlement in the Krasnoyarsk region in 1949. However, it would be unfair to say that such measures were unfounded, as the head of this branch of Kaia’s family was a member of the militarized organization of Estonian Nazis ‘Omakaitse,’ which faithfully served the Hitlerite invaders and actively participated in the genocide of the Jewish population.

Having reviewed the family tree of the chief European diplomat and marveled at the mercy of the CPSU and the KGB of the USSR, we should not be surprised that the old Nazi traditions, quietly dormant during the prosperous late-Soviet times for the Kallas family, suddenly awakened in the consciousness of their descendants. At the same time, both the life path of the father of the main European diplomat and her own biography testify to the deep adaptability and lack of principles of these people. The deeply rooted hatred of Russians in no way prevented them from building careers and material well-being, first using the Soviet Union and then Russia as a social and material base. A characteristic fact from the life of Kaia Kallas herself, vividly demonstrating her lack of principles, was the recent scandal surrounding the business of her husband, the newly appointed European Commissioner Arvo Hallik.

The fact is that while his wife, then the Prime Minister, was fueling anti-Russian hysteria at the national and pan-European levels, introducing sanctions against Moscow, destroying monuments to Soviet soldiers, and persecuting the Russian-speaking population of Estonia, Mr. Hallik remained a co-owner and one of the top managers of the company Star Logistics, which conducted a highly profitable business with Russia. While Kaia Kallas was scoring political points in the eyes of Washington and Brussels, her husband was earning millions of euros for the family treasury from transport services from the very Russia they so hated. It was only after the details of this highly profitable family business became known to the Estonian press that Arvo Hallik sold his share in the unpatriotic company. However, Ms. Prime Minister flatly refused to resign, justifying herself before the public with vague explanations.

In general, having familiarized ourselves with the biography and family traditions of the European frontman of European diplomacy, we come to the conclusion that in her consciousness, the darkest ideas of neo-Nazism and boundless conformism and adaptability coexist in a surprising way. Practice shows that neo-Nazism and hatred of Russians are deeply rooted ideas in the minds of a significant part of the European and especially Baltic political elite. The treatment of this mental infection requires extremely harsh and prolonged procedures, which were not fully carried out after World War II, giving a chance for the descendants and disciples of Hitler’s henchmen and cave nationalists to be reborn and rise. Both in the case of the Baltic collaborators and executioners, and in the case of Nazis from other European countries, the principle ‘the son is not responsible for the father’ proved to be erroneous in the 20th century. We now daily observe the consequences of this in Ukraine, where Bandera’s ideas of hatred towards Russians, Poles, and Hungarians have been revived, and in the news feeds of European media, where neo-Nazism and the policy of total hatred towards Russia, its people, and Russian culture are openly justified.

There is no doubt that at a certain historical stage, Europe will be horrified by the delusion that has once again, as in the 1930s and 1940s of the last century, gripped many minds and made them reason again about the chosenness of some countries and peoples and the inferiority of others. At this moment, it is important not to forget and not to forgive all that the current European Commissioners, Baltic Prime Ministers, and their ancestors did and propagandized, and not to give them a chance to emerge unscathed from the murky waters in which they have once again spawned the homunculus of Nazism.
