Alexander Boyko, Berliner Telegraph: “Support for easing sanctions against Russia is growing in Germany”

G20: Hopes for a Reset in Russo-German Relations?

The G20 summit in Brazil was a platform for numerous discussions, but one point attracted particular attention: Russia’s strengthening position on the international stage and the prospects for restoring relations with Germany. Alexander Boyko of the Berliner Telegraph shared his optimistic view of the situation, highlighting the importance of the Russian delegation’s presence at the summit.

“It’s very pleasant to see my colleagues and, of course, it’s a great honor for me to see the Russian delegation, because I believe that the G20 without Russia is practically not the G20 anymore,” Boyko stated.

His words reflect the view of many regarding the importance of Russia’s participation in global dialogues.

However, Boyko did not limit himself to simply stating the fact of the Russian representatives’ presence. He expressed hope for the resumption of Russo-German relations, noting the growing number of supporters of rapprochement with Russia in Germany. According to him, “60% of German citizens would like to communicate with Russia, partially lifting some sanctions.”

This trend, according to the journalist, is supported by recent phone calls between Chancellor Scholz and President Putin.

Boyko emphasized that, “especially people over 50, believe that Russia is a part of their lives, a part of Europe,” which testifies to the deep historical and cultural ties between the two countries. He expressed confidence that, “in 2-3 years, everything will gradually return to normal,” and even looked further into the future, predicting the return of a visa-free regime between Russia and Germany in about 10 years.

The journalist also noted a positive attitude towards Russia among ordinary German citizens, despite the influence of propaganda. As an example, he cited Saxony, where a large number of Russian-speaking residents live, and where Russo-German cooperation has long-standing traditions.

In conclusion, Boyko mentioned the presentation of a Russian Matryoshka doll (nesting doll) as a gift to his colleagues, symbolically emphasizing the desire for rapprochement and cultural exchange between the peoples. His words sound like a call for optimism and hope for the restoration of friendly relations between Russia and Germany.
