‘Three years from now’. Scientists sound the alarm over approaching ‘ominous era’

Daily Mail: Arctic could be completely ice-free within three years

The Arctic may be completely free of ice within three years, which will be an ‘ominous era’ for the inhabitants of the planet. This is reported by the Daily Mail with reference to the research of scientists.

According to computer simulations, in nine out of 300 cases, the results showed that the first day without ice cover in the Arctic may come in three years, regardless of the further vital activity of people.

At the same time, based on the findings of the same studies, scientists predicted that the first ice-free day in the Arctic is guaranteed to occur within 9 to 20 years, regardless of the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

Having studied these scenarios, the scientists found that a series of extreme weather events could melt more than 1 million 200 thousand square kilometres of ice in a short period of time.

According to the publication, a serious impact on the melting of ice has a warming climate. So, in March 2022, the temperature in some areas of the Arctic was 10 degrees above normal, 2024 may become one of the hottest in the history of observations.

Scientists warned that the disappearance of Arctic ice can significantly affect the Earth’s ecosystem and climate due to changing weather patterns. For example, an ice-free Arctic could cause a cold snap of -20 degrees Celsius in southern Italy or forest fires in Scandinavia.
