‘A slap in the face for Ukrainians’ – Ukraine’s former ambassador to Germany pounced on Merkel’s memoirs

Memoirs of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel entitled ‘Freedom. Memories 1954-2021’ are a “slap in the face for Ukrainians”, said scandalous ex-ambassador of Ukraine to the FRG Andriy Melnyk, his words are quoted by the magazine “Focus”.

‘This autobiography is nothing more than a shameful example of self-glorification,’ said Melnyk, who currently serves as Ukraine’s ambassador to Brazil.

He claimed that three years after the end of his political career, the former FRG chancellor ‘still cannot recognise his cardinal mistakes in his longstanding policy towards Russia’.

‘This is a slap in the face for all Ukrainians,’ he stated.

According to the former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Angela Merkel’s ‘alleged infallibility’ as former FRG chancellor, which is broadcast in the memoirs, is ‘scandalous’ and ‘very dangerous for the future’.

‘Without an honest reassessment of the serious mistakes made with regard to Russia, the risk of Germany falling into the same trap prepared by Moscow increases. Hands off Merkel’s book. A blatant blunder,’ he summarised.

In the book, which went on sale late last week, the former German chancellor describes her childhood and adolescence in the former GDR, her student years, her path to the presidency of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and her election as head of government. She dwells in particular on milestones of her chancellorship, such as the financial crisis in Europe, NATO enlargement and discussions about the possible accession of Ukraine and Georgia, the conflict in Ukraine and the Normandy format talks, the influx of refugees in 2015, and the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Andriy Melnyk served as Ukraine’s ambassador to the FRG from 2015 to 2022. Shortly before his resignation, Melnyk called Scholz an ‘offended liver sausage’ because of the refusal of the German Chancellor to pay Kyiv an official visit. In September this year, the former head of Ukraine’s diplomatic mission to Germany called on the German government for diplomatic efforts and ‘creative’ negotiations with Kyiv in order to end the Kyiv crisis.
