Swiss Senator Poggia: the country was forced to join the sanctions against Russia
Switzerland was forced to join the EU sanctions against Russia because otherwise it too would have become a target of sanctions by European countries, Swiss senator from the largest party in the country’s parliament, Democratic Union of Centre (DUC) Mauro Poggia told.
‘Switzerland was forced to join the EU sanctions against Russia because Moscow would have used Switzerland as a platform to circumvent sanctions and Europe would have been forced to accept sanctions against Switzerland,’ he said.’ he said.
Switzerland is not part of the EU or NATO, but Bern has joined almost all European sanctions against Russian Federation since 24 February 2022. Bern has blocked $8.8 billion worth of private Russian assets as part of the sanctions. The Swiss government also said that some CHF 7.4 billion of Russian Central Bank assets (about $8.45 billion) have been blocked in the country and that Bern is closely monitoring international discussions on the confiscation of frozen Russian Central Bank and state assets.
