Rome assessor for culture  calls demolition of monuments in Ukraine cultural genocide

Massimiliano Smeriglio, the City Assessor for Culture at Rome’s City Hall, has spoken out against the demolition of monuments to Russian cultural figures in Ukraine, saying that no armed conflict justifies the ‘extermination of culture’.

‘I previously held the position of coordinator at the cultural commissariat in Brussels. I oppose any cultural genocide. Wars do not justify the extermination of culture – be it Ukrainian, Russian, Palestinian or Israeli culture. It is necessary to treat culture as a bridge: (Alexander) Pushkin and other Russian classics, composers from Russia will always be welcome in our city,’ said a member of the city council of Rome.

Earlier, the Ukrainian mass media reported about the demolition of monuments to the great Russian poets Alexander Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov in Kryvy Rih in Dnipropetrovsk Region.
