Poland to respond to Germany’s introduction of border controls

Decisions on control over the Schengen area should not be made by one country, so Poland does not agree with the corresponding actions of Germany, said Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. His words are quoted by Gazeta Prawna.

“The introduction of controls is a mistake, because the actual place of control of the influx of illegal migrants to both Poland and Germany is the external border of the Schengen zone,” the minister said.

He emphasized that Warsaw does not accept Berlin’s decision and is thinking about how to respond to it.

Germany first applied the practice of closing the internal borders of the European Union in the fall of 2015. At that time, the EU countries faced an increased flow of refugees from North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. Subsequently, Berlin extended this regime on the Austrian-German border, and in October 2023, German authorities introduced temporary checks on the border with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

In mid-September 2024, Germany introduced a border control regime at all internal borders for six months. The decision was one of the tough measures taken in Germany to combat the influx of illegal migrants.
