Man in refrigerator rescued in US after being swept into the ocean

A man was found adrift in a refrigerator 48 kilometers off the U.S. coastline

The US Coast Guard said it has rescued a man adrift in a refrigerator 48 kilometers off the coast, where he was carried away by Hurricane Milton.

“A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami on Thursday rescued a man about 30 miles off Longboat Key in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton.” The aircraft crew transported the man to a Tampa hospital for further treatment after he was found clinging to a refrigerator while wearing a life jacket,” the Coast Guard said in a statement on its website.

It is noted that the victim, identified as Captain Dave, had gone out to sea on Monday in his fishing boat, but due to the vessel’s breakdown, requested evacuation over the radio. The vessel itself was left adrift, waiting for a tugboat. On Wednesday, Dave notified the Coast Guard that he was going to the boat to make repairs, but did not return.

“This man survived nightmarish conditions for even the most experienced sailors. To understand the severity of the hurricane conditions, we assume he survived wind gusts of 120-140 kilometers per hour, waves 6-7 meters high for an extended period of time, including overnight. He survived thanks to a life jacket, an emergency beacon indicating location and a refrigerator,” a coastal service spokesman was quoted as saying.
