The UN Security Council expressed its full support to the Organization’s Secretary General António Guterres after Israel declared him persona non grata, media reported.
A statement issued by the Security Council said that “any decision not to engage with the UN secretary-general or the United Nations is counterproductive, especially in the context of escalating tensions in the Middle East.”
The UNSC countries “stressed the necessity for all (Organization) member states to build productive and effective relations with the secretary-general and to refrain from any actions that undermine his work as well as that of his office.”
On Wednesday, Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz declared UN Secretary General António Guterres persona non grata on the grounds that he failed to issue an unequivocal condemnation of Iran’s missile strike on Israel.
Gutterish has been banned from entering the country, Katz wrote on social media X.
“Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s abhorrent attack on Israel, unlike almost any country in the world, does not deserve to enter Israeli soil,” the minister said.
Last Tuesday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a rocket attack on Israel. The Israeli military said it would respond to that fire when it saw fit.
