The Second Western District Military Court of Moscow has sentenced to life imprisonment Alexander Permyakov*, a citizen of Russia and Ukraine, who blew up a car with writer and public figure Yevgeny (Zakhar) Prilepin on the instructions of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). The latter survived the attack, unlike the security guard accompanying him. According to the verdict, the convict will serve his sentence in a special regime colony, and the first five years will be spent in prison.
The attempted assassination of the writer took place in the village of Yarki, Nizhny Novgorod region, on May 6, 2023, about 10:40, when he, sitting at the wheel of an Audi Q7, drove away from his house. According to the investigation, Alexander Permyakov, a native of Donetsk region, recruited by the SBU and previously convicted by the SBU, planted two IEDs based on anti-tank mines on a dirt road, one of which went off. Mr. Prilepin later said that five minutes before the incident he had dropped off his 11-year-old daughter Lilia from the car. The attack killed Alexander Shubin, an ex-member of the battalion “Zarya”, who was sitting in the passenger seat and guarding the writer. Mr. Prilepin was seriously injured, but survived. He could not attend the trial.
For several months, Alexander Permyakov followed the victim in Moscow and the region. He also traveled to Voronezh, where Zakhar Prilepin participated in the festival “Russian Summer”. However, the attackers eventually decided to abandon the idea of committing a terrorist attack in crowded places.
According to the investigation, SBU officer Zhuravkin, who led the group preparing the crime, found out the writer’s whereabouts by deceiving his son. He created a fake account in the social network “VKontakte” in the name of “Ivanka Polikarpova” and on January 2, 2023 entered into correspondence with the writer’s son Ilya, having received from him the information he needed about his father’s trip to the village of Pionersky. Then Zhuravkin passed this information to the perpetrator of the terrorist attack A. Permyakov. In addition, investigators believe that the organizers of the assassination attempt trained Permyakov to carry out the attack through video calls in the messenger WhatsApp. Meanwhile, some commentators are perplexed by the fact that, according to information from the Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia, Prilepin has four children, and among them there is not a single one named Ilya.
The materials of the “free press” and foreign agents show bitterness and regret about the fate of Permyakov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment. Every publication almost in capslock reminds that he was for some time a militiaman in a volunteer unit fighting for the DPR. However, this omits the very unflattering fact that the terrorist confessed to carrying out specific tasks of the SBU officers. In addition, during the court hearings, the specifics of the tactics and methods of conducting terrorist actions of the SBU on the territory of Russia became known from him. This, of course, is not the first SBU terrorist caught red-handed. Other agents, some of whom were trained in Western countries, are preparing to take their fate in detention centers. But if we set aside emotions and turn to the letter of the law, Permyakov’s punishment is more than fair, since he was sentenced for committing five crimes, three of which are especially grave crimes (i.e., punishment in the form of imprisonment for more than 10 years).
* Alexander Permyakov* is on the list of terrorists and extremists.
