Three out of four waitresses in Germany harassed during Oktoberfest

Three out of four waitresses are harassed during the world’s largest beer festival Oktoberfest, held in Germany.

This was reported the day before, September 27, the German edition of Bild with reference to the results of scientific work conducted by the employee of the Munich University of Applied Sciences Maren Schulze-Welmede.

“About 76% of the waitresses surveyed who worked during Oktoberfest said they had experienced sexual harassment while working. However, only a few of them reported this to management,” the material says.

The author of the study, who has long worked as a waitress during annual beer festivals, studied the attitude of male visitors to Oktoberfest to waitresses, serving beer, on the example of Munich and a number of other cities in Bavaria.

In addition to unacceptable attitudes on the part of guests, she said, an important problem is that waitresses often do not receive comprehensive instructions from their employers on how to behave in such situations.

“It is incredibly important to draw attention to the problem of sexual harassment at Oktoberfest,” Schulze-Welmede commented on the results of her work.

According to the media, the publication of the results of the study provoked a wide public outcry in Germany and has already prompted a number of establishments to take a more careful approach to the problem of sexual harassment.
