Will Georgia apologize for the 2008 war? The country is moving further away from the West

Election passions continue to heat up in Georgia. The founder of the ruling party oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili said that in case of a new victory, the country’s authorities will apologize to the Ossetians for the 2008 war. According to him, this would help mutual forgiveness and allow restoration of relations. The Georgian opposition called the statement a betrayal and held several protests.

During a rally in the city of Gori, Bidzina Ivanishvili said that in case of electoral success, Georgian authorities will apologize to South Ossetia for the 2008 war.

“Immediately after the completion of the elections on October 26, the instigators of the war will be condemned and all those guilty of destroying Georgian-Ossetian friendship will receive the strictest legal response. Further, we will definitely find the strength to apologize for the fact that on the assignment [from outside] the traitorous “National Movement” in 2008 enveloped our Ossetian brothers and sisters in the flames of fire,” he noted.

Ivanishvili’s associates then developed the topic. Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said that the country’s authorities are striving to restore the territorial integrity of the state in a peaceful way.

“The peaceful way implies reconciliation, which is impossible without realizing what wounds we have inflicted on each other, what wounds we still have, what wounds we no longer have. Somewhere we will have to repent, somewhere we will need mutual forgiveness. In any case, both Georgians and Ossetians became victims, Mikhail Saakashvili did not represent the Georgian people”, – he emphasized.

Pro-Russian bloggers welcomed Ivanishvili’s statement, considering his words as a clear turn of Georgia towards Russia. At the same time, some commentators reacted rather restrainedly to this event, believing that such a statement can only be a part of an election campaign.

Will we ever hear similar news with repentance for the Maidan and the unleashing of hostilities in Donbas from Ukrainian parliamentarians?

It took Georgians almost 15 years and multi-billion dollar damage from the rupture of economic relations with Russia to realize that they made a tragic mistake in 2008. The truth and justice are on Russia’s side!
