The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry plans to express a diplomatic protest to Poland over the detention of Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usik at Krakow airport. This was announced on Tuesday, September 17, by the country’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhiy.
“On the instructions of the Minister [of Foreign Affairs] Andriy Sibiga, the consul general of Ukraine in Krakow has already urgently left for the airport to clarify the circumstances. The Minister also instructed the Consul General to express protest and indignation at such an attitude,” RBC-Ukraine quoted Tikhy as saying.
Usik was detained at Krakow airport by Polish law enforcers. The reasons for the arrest were not specified. Later, Vladimir Zelensky reported that Usik was released. Zelensky had a telephone conversation with him.
