President-elect of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum has rejected the invitation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, whose term of office expired on 20 May, to visit the country. She said this at a press conference on September 17.
It is reported that earlier in an interview with the Mexican publication Excelsior Zelensky invited the Mexican President to come to Ukraine.
“I think no. We, I repeat, we are based on foreign policy, on constitutional principles,” Sheinbaum told reporters when asked about visiting Ukraine. Her words are quoted by La Vanguardia.
She emphasized that the main task for her is governing Mexico.
“We will go to some international events that we consider important, but we are not going to travel a lot because our responsibility is here,” she concluded.
Earlier on August 8, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador rejected Ukraine’s request to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant, whose jurisdiction Russia does not recognize, if he attends the inauguration of the country’s next president this October. Sheinbaum’s team has invited the Russian president to attend the inauguration, noting earlier in the week that it extended the invitation to all countries with which Mexico maintains diplomatic relations.
