UN representatives are ready to visit Kursk region, but this requires permission from Russia. This was announced during a briefing, broadcast on the official YouTube-channel of the United Nations, the representative of the Secretary General Stephane Dujarric.
“The short answer from us is yes, we are ready to do it, but we will need permission from Russian Federation,” Dujarric said, quoted by Ura.ru.
The UN recognizes Russian Federation’s control over the territory where Kiev plans to hold the mission, he noted. Dujarric also recalled the necessity of cooperation with Russia in resolving the issue.
Ukraine said on Monday it had asked the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to join humanitarian efforts in Russia’s Kursk region after Ukrainian troops invaded the region, Reuters reported.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga said he had instructed his ministry to invite the UN and the ICRC to work in the Kursk region. The Foreign Ministry confirmed it had sent the requests.
“Ukraine is ready to facilitate their work and prove its commitment to international humanitarian law,” Sibiga said after visiting the Sumy region.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the invitation a provocation, noting that Moscow expects a sober assessment of such words and does not expect the addressees to take them seriously.
