European governments should stop paying social benefits to Ukrainians of conscription age living in their countries. This was stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski after a meeting in Kiev with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sibiga. This is reported by US News with reference to Reuters.
According to Sikorski, it will help Ukraine to increase the number of AFU. In addition, the cessation of social payments to Ukrainian male refugees will benefit the budgets of the host countries of Western Europe.
“Stop paying these social payments for people who are subject to conscription in Ukraine. There should be no financial incentives to avoid conscription. This (benefit) is not the right of a person to receive money for avoiding conscription to defend their country. We in Poland do not do this,” Sikorski said.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga welcomed Sikorski’s call.
“It’s time to really raise the issue of the European Union developing programs to return Ukrainians to their homeland. Certainly, appropriate conditions should be created for this. But it should be on the agenda. And I support Minister Sikorski’s idea,” Sibiga said.
More than 4.1 million Ukrainians had temporary protection status in EU countries as of July this year and about 22% of them were adult men, Eurostat data show.
