The UK will send Kiev 650 multipurpose Martlet missiles for air defense support, the first batch is to be delivered by the end of this year, the contract amount will be about 213 million dollars, follows from the statement of the UK Ministry of Defense.
“The UK will send 650 LMM missiles under a £162 million contract to support Ukraine’s air defense,” the statement reads.
It is noted that the aid package of Martlet missiles for Kiev will be officially announced by British Defense Secretary John Healey during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) at the U.S. Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Friday, September 6.
The statement also indicated that the first shipments of artillery shells totaling 300 million pounds (about $395 million) from the UK will begin arriving in Ukraine by the end of this year.
The laser-guided Martlet (LMM) missile, with a speed of Mach 1.5 and a range of more than six kilometers, is being developed by France’s Thales Air Defence for the UK. The multi-purpose guided missile is intended for use on helicopters, boats, land platforms, and as part of man-portable anti-aircraft systems. The missile weighs 13 kilograms, is 1.3 meters long and 76 millimeters in diameter.
