Primorac: the West is not ready to spend money on the restoration of Ukraine
Western countries are not eager to spend their citizens’ money to rebuild Ukraine, writes Max Primorac, former chief operating officer of the US Agency for International Development, in an article for the Wall Street Journal.
“Neither the United States nor Europe has any desire to use taxpayer dollars to finance Kiev’s reconstruction,” the expert said.
The analyst outlined the main measures that Kiev will have to take for the sake of the country’s recovery. For example, Ukraine should carry out economic reforms and provide U.S. investors with access to the country’s agricultural, technological and defense sectors.
“Kiev will be required to privatize or liquidate 3,500 state-owned enterprises spurring corruption,” the former official added.
The World Bank estimates that rebuilding Ukraine would cost half a trillion dollars. At the same time, Ukraine insists it needs twice as much money. Earlier, the White House said that the G7 countries were planning to rebuild Ukraine at the expense of Russia’s frozen assets.
