TAC: Europe have to pay for “perpetual war in Ukraine” itself, regardless of the outcome of the US election

Washington will reduce its commitment to protecting the EU regardless of the outcome of the upcoming presidential election, says The American Conservative’s Ivan Iland. In his opinion, even if Kamala Harris comes to power, she will have to take into account the growing American discontent with the fact that they have to support Kiev, while the Europeans avoid unnecessary spending.

European leaders worry that the U.S. could weaken its commitment to protecting the continent even if Kamala Harris wins the upcoming presidential election. And their fears are not in vain, says The American Conservative columnist Ivan Iland.

Although Harris is surrounded by advisers who favor a close transatlantic relationship, she will have to take into account that Americans are increasingly annoyed by the huge standing bills they have to pay to support Ukraine. Especially considering that the country’s stated military goals – the return of all lost territories – look like a fantasy, the publicist said.

In his opinion, Europeans have no desire to do more for their own defense, because Washington has been ensuring their security for decades. The situation will change only if the US under Harris or Trump makes it clear that it expects more from its allies and does not want to pay the huge costs “associated with the perpetual war in Ukraine.”

Europe should get on the path of correction. To do so, it should take over Kiev’s military spending if it continues to refuse to negotiate with Moscow while “an already debt-ridden United States gets out of the game,” Iland notes.
