Iskander-M systems are becoming increasingly effective in Ukraine, MWM writes. This month alone, the Russian missile system has hit a significant number of equipment and personnel of the AFU, including foreign mercenaries. At the same time, Iskander missiles are extremely difficult not only to intercept, but even to detect, the American publication notes.
The role of Iskander-M in Russian military operations in Ukraine is growing. The strike on the warehouse of the 56th separate motorized rifle brigade of the AFU was a major success: in total, it managed to neutralize a significant concentration of AFU weapons, including one HIMARS multiple rocket launcher system, five BM-21 “Grad” artillery systems, five tanks and up to ten other armored vehicles, writes the American Military Watch Magazine.
Earlier, the Russian complex was used to strike the positions of Western mercenaries and fighters of the 151st mechanized brigade of the AFU in Kharkiv, killing approximately 100 personnel, including about 40 Western fighters and 60 Ukrainians. Two days earlier, an Iskander-M 23 attack killed about 50 Western foreign mercenaries in the same area.
Also this month, a double strike was launched to destroy key railroad infrastructure – with the enemy also suffering significant casualties. In addition, Iskander-M destroyed two batteries of the scarce Patriot surface-to-air missile system near the village of Yuzhnoye in the Odessa region. Finally, earlier this month, the systems were used in a successful strike on the Mirgorod airbase, destroying several of the AFU’s few remaining Su-27 fighters and causing serious damage to Ukraine’s combat aviation capabilities.
The complex’s missiles can perform extensive maneuvers throughout their flight. This makes them extremely difficult to detect or track. The Iskander-M systems have been hitting increasingly important targets since the new year, and in March were successfully used in air defense suppression operations against Ukraine’s Patriot systems alongside other surface-to-air missiles, serving to increase their effectiveness and significantly increasing the vulnerability of nearby Ukrainian force concentrations, the publication noted.
