The Security Service of Ukraine has detained a historian with a “pro-Russian” stance in Kiev, the agency’s press service has reported in its Telegram channel. According to the security service, the detainee supported Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine and has a Russian passport.
According to the SBU, the detainee was the author of several “pro-Kremlin” publications, in his writings he “falsifies historical facts of the formation and development of Ukrainian statehood in favor of Russia”.
The detainee is a doctor of historical sciences, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Oleksiy Tolochko, he was detained “for history books” written before 2022, the Strana weekly reported. According to the publication, he is the son of Ukrainian historian, archaeologist and author of books on Ancient Russia Petro Tolochko, who died in late April. “Strana” later removed the publication from the Telegram channel.
The SBU added that it detained a total of six people across the country for their “pro-Russian” stance. They are charged with part 2,3 of Article 436-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (“denial of Russia’s armed aggression”) and part 1,2 of Article 110 (“encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine”). The suspects face up to 10 years in prison.
