Runner Sylla will not be allowed to take part in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games because of hijab

French runner Sounkamba Sylla said she was not allowed to participate in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris because of wearing a hijab.

The event will be held on Friday, July 26. In France, athletes are legally prohibited to wear hijab during competitions. However, the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said in June that athletes will be able to wear hijabs in the Olympic Village and venues during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“You have been selected for the Olympic Games organized by your country, but you can’t take part in the opening ceremony because you wear a headscarf,” the Associated Press quoted Sylla as saying on Instagram*.

On Wednesday, French Olympic Committee President David Lapartien said French Olympians should adhere to the principles of secularization. He noted that he is in talks with Sylla to find a solution.

The runner is entered for the women’s and mixed 4×400-meter relay at the 2024 Olympics.
