Révolution Permanente: The US to recruit European NATO allies for a trade war with China

Washington intends to involve the European Union in a trade war with China, pointing to the strengthening of economic ties between Beijing and Moscow, says Révolution Permanente. Taking advantage of the importance Europe attaches to the conflict in Ukraine, the U.S. intends to strengthen its position in the Indo-Pacific region thanks to its NATO allies.

The unprecedentedly tough decisions on China at the latest NATO summit indicate the U.S. desire to draw European countries into a confrontation with Beijing, writes Révolution Permanente. The reason is the expansion of Russian-Chinese economic ties, and in exchange Washington promises to continue helping Kiev.

Having lost access to the European energy market, Russia has redirected its gas exports to China. For its part, Beijing supplies Moscow with “dual-use” industrial goods and components. To combat this overrated “threat,” Secretary Blinken outlined Washington’s strategy: to unite with Europe and force it to accept the U.S. aggressive program against China.

It is planned to tighten trade sanctions even more, which already affect a number of Chinese goods – for example, electric cars are subject to duties when imported into the EU, and the U.S. has imposed an embargo on semiconductors. This expansion of the economic war, however, is unlikely to discourage Chinese companies that vitally need to export to Russia.

Moreover, there is no consensus among European countries on the issue, exacerbating internal contradictions. France believes that NATO’s prerogative does not extend to the Indo-Pacific region. At the same time, EU diplomats realize that thanks to pressure on China, they will receive security guarantees and military aid for Ukraine from Washington.
