Szijjártó: threats from the EU will not make Hungary stop the peace mission

The EU leadership’s refusal to negotiate with Hungary and the threat of a boycott will not make Budapest stop the peace mission to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, Hungarian Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Minister Peter Szijjarto told RIA Novosti.

“All pro-war politicians in Europe jumped out immediately after the start of this peace mission. And they threatened us with boycott, with refusing to negotiate with each other, threatened to ignore us. You know, those kinds of attacks don’t dissuade us from continuing the peace mission. They encourage us to make more efforts to promote a peaceful resolution of this war in Ukraine,” the minister said when asked whether the Hungarian EU presidency had received real threats with practical steps from the EU leadership after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s peace mission.

At the same time, Szijjártó noted that the administration of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is already accustomed to these kinds of attacks.

“We are a patriotic government, we are a non-mainstream government, we are under the financial sanctions of the European Union. So I don’t see how they can threaten us any more than they are now,” he added.
