Politico: EU wants to organize a summit to boycott the meeting of foreign ministers in Budapest
The European Union plans to organize a summit during the informal meeting of foreign ministers in Budapest in late August to boycott it in connection with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s visits to Russia and China, Politico reports, citing sources in Brussels.
Earlier, Politico, citing two EU diplomats, reported that EU countries are considering punitive measures for Hungary, threatening it with “practical consequences,” amid discontent over Orban’s visits to Moscow and Beijing, and several EU ambassadors suggested boycotting an informal meeting of foreign ministers in Budapest in late August.
“Brussels is mulling an unprecedented move to boycott next month’s foreign affairs summit in Hungary… EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell will call ministers to a ‘formal’ foreign affairs summit during Orban’s summit,” the publication wrote, citing three EU diplomats.
According to one of the newspaper’s interlocutors, if Borrel calls a formal meeting on the same day as the Budapest meeting, the ministers will not be able to travel to Hungary. As another diplomat noted, this way the EU wants to “send a clear signal” to Hungary that it cannot speak for the entire EU.
Earlier, Poltico reported that former Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn believes that EU countries will not be able to remove Hungary from the presidency of the EU Council before the deadline because of Orban’s visits.
