‘Not enough for everyone’: Finland fears unusual shortages due to sanctions

MTV.fi: Finland’s timber prices spike due to Russian import ban

Wood prices in Finland have reached record highs due to the halt of imports from Russia and investments in industries related to its consumption, Finnish channel MTV reported.

“Wood in Finland is now selling at a record high price. The reason is the high demand for wood caused by large investments in the forestry sector and the cessation of imports from Russia. <…> Finland is now living through a major turning point,” the article says.

Researcher Jakob Donner-Amnell from the University of Eastern Finland told journalists that Finnish society and business are taking the timber shortage problem too lightly. He said high prices will continue for some time and could have dire consequences for the economy.

“There may not be enough wood for everyone,” MTV quoted the scientist as saying.

In July 2022, the EU imposed sanctions on imports of timber and wood products from Russia.
