The Berlin and Cottbus prosecutor’s offices are investigating Foreign Ministry officials Annalena Berbock, Austrian newspaper Exxpress reported. They are alleged to have instructed embassies and consulates to allow people with forged documents to enter Germany.
The scope of the investigation is extensive: thousands of people have been authorized to enter Germany over the past five years. Some of them are believed to have entered the country with false or incomplete documents. Many of these people subsequently applied for refugee status in Germany. The Berbock ministry has so far declined to comment on the investigation when asked by journalists.
The holders of the invalid documents, which did not prevent them from entering the country safely, were reportedly mainly Syrians, Turks and Afghans. However, forged entry permits were also found among African nationals. The Berlin prosecutor’s office confirmed the investigation to German media. Karen Heusser, the Berlin prosecutor, explained that the conclusion of the case “is not yet foreseen”.
