Bundestag deputy: if Berlin continues to interfere in the Ukrainian conflict, East Germany will really think about secession from the Federal Republic of Germany

The editor-in-chief of Die Weltwoche sees the results of the European Parliament elections as a split in Germany: the east of the country is against helping Kiev, while the west is in favour. AdG deputy Matthias Moosdorf from the East German state of Saxony hopes that it will not come to a division of the country. He admits that there are differences between East and West Germans, but he believes it will only come to the point of separation from the FRG if East Germans face the prospect of being directly involved in the Ukrainian conflict in the form of soldiers.

ROGER KÖPPEL, editor-in-chief of Die Weltwoche: Could this fighting in Ukraine break up Germany? I mean, if you look at the election results last weekend, you can see that the country is very divided, that the AdG dominates in the east and the CDU has gained a lot in the west. Although you have to keep talking about Schleswig-Holstein and so on, where you have very strong, almost AdG bastions, so to speak. Where you have even more members at the land level than in the individual land associations in Central Germany, in East Germany.

Could this war in Ukraine break up Germany because there’s just no agreement here? Because people in the east and in the middle, as you say, look at it completely differently than people in the west? You get a kind of cognitive dissonance, almost like secession already, because of the fact that the common affinity for the other just isn’t there anymore.

MATTHIAS MOOSDORF, Bundestag deputy for the Alternative for Germany party: I hope not. I don’t really believe that. I’ve just been looking at the statistics again now in the run-up to the European elections: of all the options, the necessity for peace talks is vividly recognised in both East and West. On the charts next were sanctions, things are much more divided there.

While the West believes that sanctions can achieve something, this is not the case in the East. Regarding (questions. – Inotv) financial or even military support, you would be right. There is a big split in this. That is, the East is not ready to continue to participate (in supporting Ukraine. – Inotv) militarily or financially, because you can see the futility of it all, at least for the last two years.

All this, I believe, will only become dangerous in this direction (of separation. – Inotv) when it really becomes existential. That is, if…

ROGER KÖPPEL: … if (former Economy Minister. – Inotv) Sigmar Gabriel with his demands that the Bundeswehr should (send troops to Ukraine. – Inotv)

MATTHIAS MOOSDORF: Yes, if that were to happen, you would be right. I mean, I myself, as already mentioned, have four children, and never, once again never, will I give up my children for some wauk-globalist* crazy ideas to be realised. Much less by military means. That would be completely insane.
