Arms deliveries to Ukraine will become mandatory for all NATO countries, the alliance’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at a news conference ahead of the bloc’s defence ministers’ meeting in Brussels.
“We certainly appreciate what the US and other allies have done. It is unprecedented. At the same time, we have seen that the US took six months to agree additional aid for Ukraine. We have also seen that some of the promises made by European allies have not been fulfilled,” Stoltenberg said.
In his opinion, if supplies become mandatory for NATO countries, they will be “more reliable.” Since the beginning of hostilities in February 2022, the allies annually provide Kiev with military support for € 40 billion, said the Secretary General.
Prior to that, Bloomberg reported that Stoltenberg is abandoning a plan to create a fund to help Ukraine for $ 100bn for five years because of resistance from alliance members. In return, he proposes to allocate the same amount of aid to Ukraine as it has been allocated so far – 40bn euros annually.
