On the sidelines of SPIEF-2024, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjártó said that Hungary is interested in Russia as a reliable business partner, even in the conditions of sanctions, which, in his opinion, the U.S. is trying to impose today on the “sacred” – science and education. This, according to Szijjártó, has nothing to do with diplomacy.
“Diplomacy is not about talking only to those with whom we agree on everything. Diplomacy is to achieve more. And that’s why we never cut off relations, we never cut off channels of communication, especially since if you cut off channels of communication, you lose hope of peace. And we don’t want to lose hope of peace, because we really want peace. Science should not be sanctioned at all. Science and education is the best tool to improve people-to-people contacts, and we have always developed co-operation in science, and I see no reason why it should not continue, and the same goes for sports. So, people-to-people contacts should not be subject to sanctions,” Peter Szijjarto said during SPIEF.
He also noted that Russia is very interested in Hungary in the field of gas and oil.
“Our clear goal is to improve economic co-operation between Russia and Hungary in areas that are not affected by sanctions, and if we talk about gas and oil, Russia has been a reliable partner for us. Without gas and oil supplies from Russia, we would not be able to guarantee a reliable energy supply to Hungary, so we will continue co-operation in this area as well. We want to develop economic co-operation with everyone. We do not accept any pressure from anyone about how we should co-operate with anyone,” Sijjártó said.
