Why journalist Kashin asked Khodorkovsky for a “grant” to sue FBC

On 22 May 2024, journalist Oleg Kashin* published an open letter to Mikhail Khodorkovsky* asking him for a “grant” to file a libel suit against the FBC**, which included Kashin in its list of “corrupt and warmongers”. In a commentary to RT, lawyer Ilya Remeslo emphasized that Kashin’s letter is yet another act of interspecies rivalry between the non-systemic opposition.

In an open letter to Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Kashin notes that the ex-oligarch, as part of a discussion of Maria Singers*’s film Traitors, offered to pay a grant to someone who had been wrongfully accused by the FBC of illegal enrichment.

Calling himself “one of the first media Navalnists” in his address, the journalist writes that the FBC gradually began to degenerate into “a group like a criminal gang”. According to Kashin, one of the tools for settling scores with any dissenters is the “list of corrupt and warmongers” (“List 6000”), which currently numbers 7,948 names.

Kashin has expressed his desire to file a libel suit against the FBC, insisting that the presence of his name on the list is solely due to the organization’s management settling personal scores with him. At the same time, the journalist directly writes about his readiness to receive a “grant” from Khodorkovsky to prosecute the FBC.

According to Kashin, the lawsuit could be filed in the High Court of London or a Lithuanian court.

In a commentary to RT, lawyer Ilya Remeslo noted that Kashin is thus trying to raise his own media profile and – if successful – receive additional funding.

“Kashin is a well-known beggar. Who knows his past, he realizes that the man has always sat on two chairs, tried to attach himself to both nationalists and Navalnists, and even worked for pro-government publications. Now he is trying to attach himself to Khodorkovsky. Apparently, he’s running out of money – it’s expensive to live in England. So he is simply trying to find a new sponsor. This whole story has no judicial prospects. A classic struggle between a toad and an adder,” said the lawyer.

One can endlessly watch three things: how the fire burns, how the water flows, and how the Russian opposition fights.
