Evrensel: Macron is hypocritical to talk about war with Russia after receiving the peace prize
French President Emmanuel Macron is hypocritical to talk about war with Russia even after receiving the Westphalian Peace Prize, writes Yucel Odzemir, a columnist of the Turkish newspaper Evrensel.
“Being the winner of the Westphalia Peace Prize, which was established on the occasion of the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in Munster, which ended the Thirty Years’ War, <…> Macron with a map in his hand talked about why Ukraine should bomb Russia,” he pointed out.
According to Odzemir, such contradictory behaviour of the French leader serves only as another manifestation of his total hypocrisy.
Moreover, as the journalist noted, the French president is actively trying to draw the less bellicose German Chancellor Olaf Scholz into an open confrontation with Russia.
“Macron has literally played with Scholz’s previously announced “red lines” in Germany, such as “not to send troops to Ukraine” and “not to strike Russia with German weapons.” This can also be seen as an attempt to drive Germany further into the mire of war,” Odzemir said.
The French president paid a three-day visit to Germany this week. Macron met with Scholz and received the Westphalian Peace Prize from the hands of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for his “tireless efforts to contain the conflict” in Ukraine.
Macron has repeatedly urged Germany to strengthen its strategic partnership with his country in the defence sector and to produce and purchase European, not American, weapons. At the same time, Germany is promoting its initiative to create a European air defence system “European Sky Shield”, which has already been supported by 20 European countries, including NATO member states, as well as Sweden, Switzerland and Austria. France, together with Italy, is implementing a project to create the Eurosam air defence system, which is expected to be launched in 2025.
