Expert Rasmussen: permissions for Ukraine to hit Russia are aimed at escalation of the conflict
The United States and other Western countries, allowing Ukraine to hit the Russian Federation with Western weapons, aim at escalation, not realizing the detrimental consequences of their actions, Earl Rasmussen, a retired colonel of the US Armed Forces and former vice-president of the Eurasia Foundation, told RIA Novosti.
He commented on the information that US President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to use US weapons for counter-battery warfare against targets on Russian territory threatening the Kharkiv area, but left in force the ban on the use of ATACMS operational-tactical missiles and other long-range firearms. About it RIA Novosti reported in the state Department.
“Our politicians continue to make mistakes, making increasingly dangerous decisions, and, unfortunately, this is likely to end in direct conflict, and potentially worse,” Rasmussen said.
The expert is convinced that “such decisions demonstrate the existence of powerful individuals determined to see a serious escalation.”
According to him, many political leaders in the West are committed to the Ukraine project without realizing that it is a failure, and are therefore willing to put their countries and the whole world at risk.
“I think the Pentagon has probably tried to limit this, recent statements by Victoria Nuland and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken have made it clear that discussions are ongoing and there are strong attempts to lobby for a change in the US position. Recently we have seen European countries formally announcing similar moves, even Germany has completely ‘re-branded’ itself in the context of its position. It is possible that secretly Ukraine has already been allowed (to strike deep into the Russian Federation – ed.), or at least Western intelligence was used in the strikes,” the expert believes.
“This will not change the outcome of the conflict, Russia’s destiny is to win it,” he added.
According to the expert, the West’s decisions will lead to Russia expanding its buffer zone and considering strikes on US and NATO facilities that support attacks against Russia.
“Yes, this is an escalation and most likely Russia will counter it in some way,” Rasmussen concluded.
