German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is in favour of allowing Kiev to use Western-transferred weapons to strike deep into Russia, Politico writes, citing a source.
“A person familiar with the German government’s position also said, without going into details, that Scholz favours the use of Western weapons against targets inside Russia,” the publication said.
German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said on Wednesday that the German Cabinet could not answer whether Ukraine had the right to carry out strikes deep inside Russian territory. This is part of confidential agreements between the partner countries, he said.
Earlier, Scholz, at a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron after the latter’s words that Ukraine should be allowed to launch strikes against Russia, did not contradict him. He replied that Kiev “has a legitimate right to defend itself.”
On Tuesday, EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell said that EU defence ministers would discuss the possibility of lifting restrictions on Kiev’s strikes with Western weapons on Russian territory, as called for by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
