Erdogan has admitted his party’s defeat in Turkey’s elections
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has admitted that the ruling Justice and Development Party failed to achieve the desired results in the past municipal elections.
Local government elections were held in Turkey on Sunday. Turkey’s opposition People’s Republican Party is overtaking the ruling Justice and Development Party for the first time in 20 years after nearly 90 per cent of votes were counted, according to figures published by state TV channel TRT Haber. In addition to Istanbul, Ankara and Antalya, which have been ruled since 2019, new cities such as the industrial centers of Bursa and Tekirdag have also fallen under the opposition’s control.
“Unfortunately, after winning the May 2023 elections, we failed to achieve the desired results in the municipal elections nine months later,” Erdogan said in Ankara in his first speech after the vote.
He added that the ruling party will analyze the election results, which show the omissions on the ground.
