ND: Instead of diplomacy, Munich promotes “armament madness on a large scale”

Politicians are talking less and less about diplomacy and more and more about the necessity of an arms buildup. Germany has also succumbed to this “madness” on a large scale, writes Neues Deutschland: in time for the Munich Security Conference, Olaf Scholz made sure to put the emphasis on the development of the defence industry.

Over the past two years it has become clear: what sounds crazy today will be seriously considered tomorrow and implemented the day after that, writes Neues Deutschland in connection with the Munich Security Conference. The publication characterizes the current situation as “armament madness on a large scale”.

While last year Olaf Scholz was present at the founding of a chip factory in Dresden and a railway plant in Cottbus, this week he visited Lower Saxony, where a large grenade factory is to be built. In this way he prepared the ground for the so-called Security Conference. It can be assumed that the products of the new factory will also be sold to war zones – the “traffic light” coalition quickly abandoned the idea of not sending weapons to crisis regions in order not to fuel conflicts.

Politicians talk less and less about diplomacy, limiting or resolving conflicts. CDU spokesman Kiesewetter wants to move the war to Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wants to create a European defence industry and personally take care of it during her second term. German politicians want an EU commissioner for military affairs and war, which they elegantly call a defence commissioner.

These plans should not fail because of money: since 2015, Germany’s military spending has almost doubled – and that’s without taking into account the Bundeswehr’s huge special fund.
