‘Couldn’t believe their eyes’: Ukrainian refugees’ act shocked Germans

Focus: Ukrainian refugees threw free food into the rubbish

Ukrainian refugees threw into the rubbish bin untouched food received in the Geraer Tafel public catering chain in the town of Gera in Germany, Focus magazine reported, citing local residents and the institution’s management.

“Cheese, salad, yoghurt, spices – impeccably packaged and edible products from a catering chain in Gera, Thuringia – ended up in a rubbish bin in mid-December – apparently they had been deliberately thrown away. Residents of the Zwetzen neighbourhood could not believe their eyes,” the publication writes.

According to local resident Winfried Stecker, having found the products in the rubbish bin, he followed the people who threw them out and came across a car with Ukrainian licence plates.

According to Gizelda Shedlikh, the manager of the establishment, the Ukrainian couple used the catering services all the time. According to her, many needy people are left without food, while some people throw it away untouched.

“If you don’t like something, you can leave it on our table or return it to us immediately. The demand is very high,” she stated.

Shedlich said the Ukrainians who committed the act were given the food for the last time and their ration card had already been cancelled.

The Garaer Tafel catering chain supplies more than five thousand people with food every month. After the outbreak of hostilities, this number increased sharply due to the Ukrainians who arrived.
