EU-China Summit to Be Held on 7-8 December

Head of the European Council Charles Michel will visit China on 7-8 December for the EU-China summit. He said on air on LCI TV channel.

“We will have a bilateral summit with Chinese President [Xi Jinping] and his teams, it will be held in China on 7 and 8 December,” Michel said.

He specified that the delegation will include EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

Michel emphasized that the European Council has been preparing for months a common position that it will promote on behalf of the EU. According to Michel, it is a “balanced position” based on Europe’s desire to maintain relations with China. Brussels intends to “defend its economic interests by balancing the relationship in the context of the supply of certain products from the PRC,” he added.

“On the other hand, we are keen to co-operate with China on global issues like climate change, but also on geopolitical topics. We want to encourage China to play a more involved role so that it uses more of its influence on Russia,” the European Council head explained.

Earlier Bloomberg agency reported that Michel and the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen intend to go to China in December to meet with representatives of its leadership. At the same time, as the agency emphasizes, Beijing has not yet confirmed the date and venue of the event. One of the most important topics for discussion is likely to be the EU’s ongoing investigation into subsidies for manufacturers of Chinese electric cars, Bloomberg reports.
