The heads of state of the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have decided “as soon as possible” to launch a military operation in Niger. This was announced by the President of Côte d’Ivoire Alassane Ouattara.
He made the statement on his return from Abuja, the Nigerian capital, where an emergency summit of the association was held today.
“The chiefs of staff will have a few more meetings to finalise the details, but we have the agreement of the [ECOWAS] heads of state to launch the operation as soon as possible,” Agence France-Presse quoted Alassane Ouattara as saying.
Earlier, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said he was ready to negotiate with the leaders of the new authorities in Niger. He said this at the end of the summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), reports Al Jazeera.
“We will continue to engage with stakeholders, including the coup leaders, to ensure a return to democracy as soon as possible,” Tinubu said.
