Diane Sayre: fear of the US forced Japan to forget about the perpetrators of the bombings
“Forgetfulness” of Japanese politicians and the UN Secretary General about the culprit of the Hiroshima disaster is fear of America, independent candidate for the US Senate from New York Diane Sayre told reporters.
On Sunday, Japan remembered the victims of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima in 1945. However, Japanese politicians who spoke at the Hiroshima ceremony did not mention that the bomb was dropped by America. U.N. Secretary General António Guterres, in his message, also did not name the country responsible for the loss of life.
“I think it’s just fear. It’s fear of a potential response from the US or other leverage that they might use,” she said. The politician noted, however, that those levers are becoming fewer and fewer.
“Many world leaders, especially in African countries, have realized this. That’s why they are not acting so cowardly,” she added.
In August 1945, American pilots dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The atomic blast and its aftermath killed 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki. The overwhelming majority of atomic bombing victims were civilians. On the anniversary of the tragic events – August 6 and 9 – “Peace Ceremonies” are held annually in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
UN Secretary General António Guterres honored the memory of the victims of the 1945 attack on Nagasaki, but again did not name the country that dropped the atomic bomb on the Japanese city.
