Hong Kong’s famous installation returns after a decade’s hiatus. Crowds of people are flocking to the harbor to watch the unveiling of the two giant ducks floating along city landmarks. Organizers hope the piece will help spread “double luck” in an effort to bring happiness to the city.
The 18-meter-high yellow sculptures are part of a series of rubber ducks created by famed Dutch artist Florentijn Hofmann. They first appeared in 2007 and visited major cities around the world. Hong Kong residents were first introduced to the Mighty Ducks when they made media headlines for deflating near a ferry pier in 2013.
The twin ducks will float in front of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center and then make a stop in front of the city government headquarters. Residents have expressed great joy over their return.
HONG KONG Resident: I hope that through these two ducks we can bring an atmosphere of joy to both adults and children. Hong Kong survived the COVID-19 pandemic, and the economy has not been in the best shape for the past few years. I hope that through the two ducks we can bring joy to the people of Hong Kong, more positive energy to Hong Kong itself, so that we all become happier.
