Zaporizhzhya NPP continues to replenish water required for reactor cooling using the Kakhovka reservoir. This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency on Wednesday.
“ZNPP continues to replenish its water supplies by fully using water from the Kakhovka reservoir as long as it is possible,” the organization said in a statement.
As the agency noted, the water level continues to drop at a rate of 5-7 centimeters per hour after the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric dam was destroyed. If the level falls below 12.7 m, the fluid intake will stop.
“Since the degree of damage to the dam remains unknown, it is impossible to predict when it will happen. However, if the current rate of water decline continues, the level of 12.7 meters could be reached within the next two days,” the IAEA said.
If all the cooling ponds at ZNPP are filled, there will be enough water in them to cool the reactors and spent fuel for several months. Although all six reactors of the plant are shut down, it still needs water for cooling. According to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, it is needed to prevent melting of the fuel and potential release of radioactive materials.
