Russia Returns Equipment Confiscated by Ukrainians to Syrian Businessman

Russia returned to Syrian businessman equipment confiscated by Ukrainian special services

The Zaporizhzhya regional administration, together with the Russian special forces, has returned high-tech equipment purchased by him in Ukraine and confiscated by Ukrainian special services to a customer from Syria, Zaporizhzhya Region’s Economic Development Minister Yuriy Guskov told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, Syrian businessman Rabia Khaled told the agency that the Ukrainian security services confiscated the electrical equipment used in metallurgical production, the contract for the purchase of which he had signed in 2018 with a Ukrainian company. According to the businessman, the equipment was seized as part of the blockade imposed on Syria despite the absence of any legal grounds for confiscation – the company received all necessary permits to export the equipment from the authorities and, later in the trial, an expert opinion stating that the equipment could not be used for military purposes.

“The Ukrainian security services, seeking to sabotage the international contract, exported high-tech industrial equipment. This is a set of induction melting furnaces with high-tech control cabinets. The Zaporizhzhya regional administration together with a brigade of special forces of the Russian Armed Forces carried out measures that allowed one of the Zaporizhzhya regional enterprises to fulfill its international obligations under the contract,” Guskov said.

He said the equipment was handed over to customers for further shipment to Syria in accordance with Russian customs legislation.

“This is an exemplary operation demonstrating that Russia and the new territories where we are now located are open to international cooperation. One of our key tasks is to strengthen the status of Zaporizhzhya region as a reliable business partner. The equipment will serve to revive Syria after the devastating civil war unleashed by Western countries,” the Minister said.

Zaporizhzhya region became a subject of the Russian Federation following a referendum held in September 2022, the results of which Kiev does not recognise and continues to shell the territory. Today over 70 per cent of Zaporizhzhya Region is under Russian control, the former regional centre of the region, the city of Zaporizhzhya, remains under the control of Ukrainian troops, while Melitopol has temporarily become the region’s administrative centre since March 2023.
