The forum of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation on poverty reduction and sustainable development opened in the Chinese city of Yanglin in the Shaanxi Province.
One of the forum’s major themes is exchange of views for the sake of enrichment, cooperation for the common benefit – promotion of poverty alleviation and sustainable development of rural areas in the SCO countries.
The forum will be attended by leaders of China and other SCO countries, representatives of relevant agencies, international organisations, businesses, as well as experts and scholars. In particular, the forum’s opening ceremony was addressed by the SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming. Members of the Russian embassy are expected to attend.
The forum was also preceded by an exhibition on efforts to reduce poverty in different countries.
In September 2022, Chinese President Xi Jinping, attending the 22nd meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State, proposed that China hold a forum on poverty reduction and sustainable development in 2023.
