Anti-Government Rally Held in Belgrade

Protesters in Serbia have surrounded the building of state television channel RTS in central Belgrade, demanding that the country’s President Aleksandar Vucic loosen his control over the media, the Associated Press reported Saturday.

Tens of thousands of opposition supporters took part in the protest, some demanding Vucic’s resignation, according to the agency. Those disgruntled accused the television station of a pro-government stance.

The rally was the fourth in a month. Earlier in May, three mass protests organised by the opposition took place in Belgrade under the slogan “Serbia against violence”. The protests were prompted by recent incidents: On May 3, a 13-year-old boy opened fire at a school, killing eight students and guards and wounding six others, students and a female teacher. The next day, a 21-year-old youth killed eight and wounded 14 people, mostly children, in the Mladenovac municipality, which is part of Belgrade’s city district.

Earlier on Saturday, Serbian Defence Minister Milos Vucevic replaced Vucic as leader of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party. Vucic announced his decision to step down as party leader to his supporters at a large rally the day before. Hundreds of thousands of Serbs attended.
