Swedish companies prefer to export eggs to Europe instead of selling them at home, TV4 reports. This is due to higher European selling prices and increased demand. At the same time, because of outbreaks of salmonellosis in the Scandinavian kingdom, there is a shortage of eggs, and in some stores, the shelves are empty.
In Europe, egg prices are higher than in Sweden, so Swedish companies see many advantages in the European market. In addition, eggs are in high demand in Europe because the region has been hit hard by bird flu. According to TV4, producers in the European market get about 10 Swedish kronor per kilogram more than in Sweden.
In January 2023, Sweden exported about a thousand tons of eggs, almost twice as much as in the same month in the previous three years. This large difference is partly due to the bird flu that spread at the beginning of 2021 and affected several poultry farms. However, production companies did not receive full compensation from the state for the costs they incurred due to higher feed and energy prices, resulting in fierce competition among egg suppliers, writes TV4.
Although exporting to Europe brings producers more money, it also contributes to the shortage of eggs in Sweden. Nevertheless, Swedish egg lovers should not be left without their favorite product at Easter, as 80 percent of all hen houses in the country are still operating, TV4 concludes.
