Prime Minister of Saxony: Germany Is Directly Involved in Ukraine Conflict

The prime minister of the German state of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer of the Christian Democratic Union, has admitted that Germany is directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine.

In an interview with Focus magazine published on Sunday, Kretschmer said that the decision to supply arms to Kiev had “left calls for negotiations behind”.

“Now we are directly involved in this conflict. I think this is exactly what we should not have done, to be more credible and active as a mediator and a diplomatic player,” the Saxon prime minister said.

At the same time, he believes that the conflict in Ukraine will not end any time soon. And freezing it, according to Kretschmer, is not a solution.

“The situation is getting worse and worse. What is needed is a ceasefire and negotiations,” the politician concluded.

He rejected the claim that the Minsk agreements led to this development in Ukraine.

“That is not entirely true. The Minsk agreements initially prevented a war in Europe. However, the decision to invest heavily in European security as well as in the modernisation of the Bundeswehr was not made,” Kretschmer concluded.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly stated that NATO will not become a party to the conflict in Ukraine, but the West will continue to support the country as long as necessary.
